Lulled into a false sleep by a glut of new technologies but without any real action as we discuss more than we actually do. We Tweet, Skype, or Blog but EdTech is still in a deep coma keeping the promises of technology from being realized. It is time to apply the paddles and shock EdTech back to wakefulness. Come discuss with keynote speaker, Dr. Stager ways to change the way we actually do technology integration.

The Rod Serling Video Festival, a K-12 student video festival started in 1995 to promote the creative use of video technology in both the home and classroom, has been steadily gaining in popularity among students, educators, and parents throughout the state of New York. Whether it is a comedy, drama, or animated work one thing you can be sure of… you will be both inspired and amazed at the quality of work being performed by these young people. The presentation will include screening of award winning student produced videos from previous year’s (each video is 5 minutes or less), a discussion on the creative process, information about entering the festival, and the various prize and award categories. Educators will also see how to team with the Rod Serling Video Festival to initiate a video program at your school or to compliment any existing video production classes already in progress. Opportunities for Distance Learning Broadcasts or site visits will be discussed.

Anne Marley's special education class will talk about the various types of technology and software used to research, create, design and produce their Chinese culture project via distance learning.  NYSCATE participants will be able to ask the students questions about their presentation and will receive a copy of their PowerPoint presentation. Students will be participating in puppetry video conferencing, a Mandarin Chinese class and Celebrating Chinese culture series to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to produce an enhanced PowerPoint presentation complete with streamed video, animation and music. Participants will be connected into the student's classroom to talk with them during the presentation.

This presentation will highlight some of commonly found MUVEs (multi-user virtual environments) for adults and children.  Then a brief demonstration will be given involving the program Second Life and how it can help teachers develop their content areas and encourage professional collaboration.

This interactive presentation will explore the concept of embodied cognition as it relates to new ways of learning in the classroom, and actively engage participants to experience how and why these tools work. Roberta and Chris will highlight the research, results, and implications of this burgeoning field.  They will focus on different ways that music and movement can change mood and improve learning in the classroom. Working in the Industry is scoring as high as the second choice of middle and high schools students (after pro sports) in recent surveys.  What are the careers?  How can students be prepared for them?  Do they need advanced degrees? What should they be looking for in higher education institutions? In this session we'll try to answer these questions and point you to a variety of resources that will help both you and your students be better prepared for the road ahead. Stephen Jacobs is a Professor of Game Design and Development at RIT and a Game Designer for Ratatoskr Entertainment, Inc.  He is the Outreach Coordinator for the Education Special Interest Group of the International Game Developers Association.

This session will present research that counters the idea that “not enough professional development” is the cause of technology not being used in the classroom. For many teachers, they only receive technology professional development outside the classroom, and it never crosses the doorstep into the classroom. This session will explore two models of professional development that cross that barrier: classroom embedded professional development and student-led professional development.
